From there we sail on through the Ionian islands – depending on wind and weather, with stops on green coasts and in hidden anchor bays. Through the Gulf of Patras we pass the imposing Rion-Antirion Bridge and continue sailing through the Gulf of Corinth, framed by the mountains of the Peloponnese and the mainland. The Greek west coast and the Gulf of Corinth offer perfect conditions for an unforgettable sailing trip in August. From the lively island of Zakynthos, we head along the Ionian coast of the Peloponnese into the Gulf of Patras, under the impressive Rio-Antirio Bridge and through the 60 nautical mile long Gulf of Corinth – an exciting area with its own challenges, framed by mountains and rich in history, from ancient sites to the Oracle of Delphi. The highlight of the navigation is the spectacular transit through the legendary Corinth Canal – 6,3 kilometers between steep rock faces into the Saronic Gulf. The stages are varied – from sheltered bays to open sea passages and the canal transit. Depending on the weather and the crew, extensive swimming stops, snorkelling in secluded bays and shore excursions to picturesque harbour towns are possible. The journey is straightforward: Zakynthos airport is only 5 km from the marina and is served by direct flights from many European cities in summer. From the destination port of Poros, you can quickly reach Piraeus by ferry and from there to Athens International Airport in about an hour.
In August we can expect summer temperatures (air: Ø 28–34°C, water: Ø 26°C). In the Ionian Sea the winds are usually moderate from the north-west with 2–5 Bft., ideal for enjoyable sailing with sporty sections. In the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf the Meltemi can provide fresh wind. Calms are possible in the morning hours, in the afternoon a reliable thermal breeze often builds up. Rain is extremely rare in August – bright blue sky is almost guaranteed.

What tasks does the crew have?
Anyone can help with sailing if they want, even take the helm at times, or simply enjoy the wonderful nature and the day. In addition, everyone is jointly responsible for the crew’s well-being. This means that everyone takes turns preparing breakfast or seeing to dinner. Usually, the hobby cooks on board quickly emerge, and those who are not so keen on cooking simply step back and do the washing up. When casting off and berthing, everyone usually lends a hand according to their abilities and after instruction from the skipper. The boat is to be kept clean by the crew members during the trip. However, the final cleaning is done by the marina staff.
What does the ship’s kitty actually mean?
All crew members (except the skipper) pay a jointly agreed amount into the ship’s kitty. This kitty covers all common expenses incurred during the trip (e.g. diesel, harbour fees, deposit insurance, transit log, visitor’s tax, national and nature park fees, service pack for the provided bed linen, final cleaning, gas, marina fee for the first and last night in harbour, etc.). According to old seafaring tradition, the skipper is provided for by the crew during the trip.
What does cabin charter mean?
Cabin charter is the best opportunity for anyone who wants to get to know the sailing life. No prior knowledge or personal sailing experience is necessary. Perhaps you have already gained some sailing experience, completed sailing training and want to deepen it? – Then the skipper will give you the opportunity to try yourself out and help you gain future confidence. The crew can help shape the course of the trip and your wishes will be taken into account, subject to safety and weather. On such a trip you will meet like-minded people, make new pleasant acquaintances and have an experienced skipper at your side who takes care of all nautical matters. The cabins on the yacht are usually equipped with different but very similar cabins. The berths are allocated by the skipper taking the crew’s wishes into account. Entire cabins can be chartered by individuals, couples or families. Payment is per person and you don’t have to worry about anything else.
We want to make sailing more sustainable and environmentally friendly. On our GALINI we test innovative products to combine a great sailing experience with the smallest possible ecological footprint. Our small team of experienced skippers looks forward to experiencing a real sailing adventure together with you. Our base is on Poros, Greece – from there we explore the most beautiful cruising areas in the world.
