This voyage connects two fascinating sailing areas: the open sea between Sardinia and the Balearics, and the island world of Menorca and Mallorca. The crossing from north-west Sardinia to Menorca (~200 nm) is the navigational heart – a true offshore passage with one night at sea. On Menorca we expect a pristine sailing area with two safe harbours (Mahón and Ciudadela) and numerous sheltered coves along the quieter south coast. Menorca can be rough along the north coast due to the Tramontana wind – the south coast usually offers calm conditions. The crossing to Mallorca (Ciudadela → Alcúdia, ~35 nm) is short and straightforward. Mallorca's north-west coast along the Serra de Tramuntana is one of the most impressive coastal landscapes in the Mediterranean – spectacular cliffs, hidden coves and the harbours of Sóller and Andratx provide safe ports of call. Two buffer days – one in Mahón, one on Mallorca's north coast – give us the flexibility that October weather demands. The starting harbour on Sardinia is not yet final – Alghero, Stintino or Porto Torres in the north-west offer the shortest crossing. Departure from Palma de Mallorca is straightforward thanks to the large international airport accessible from everywhere.
Our adventure begins on Saturday in Sardinia. After boarding, getting to know each other and the safety briefing, we prepare for the big crossing. In the evening we set sail – course Menorca. Around 195 nautical miles lie ahead of us, one night and one day on the open sea. We settle into the watch system, navigate by the stars and experience sunrise and sunset at sea. Upon arrival in Mahón, one of the world's most impressive natural harbours welcomes us – six kilometres long, lined by the mighty fortress La Mola, small islands and the charming old town. After a rest day for recovery we explore Menorca's famous south coast: the coves Cala Turqueta, Cala Galdana and Cala Macarella are among the most beautiful anchorages in the Mediterranean – in October we lie almost alone, surrounded only by the turquoise water and pine forests. Via Ciudadela with its Gothic old town and picturesque harbour basin we cross over to Mallorca. The north coast with the bay of Alcúdia welcomes us before we experience the spectacular north-west coast along the Serra de Tramuntana – Port de Sóller, the gorge Sa Calobra with the Torrent de Pareis, the peninsula Sa Foradada and the cliffs at Deià from the water. Via Port d’Andratx we finally reach Palma de Mallorca, where our voyage ends. Which harbours and anchorages we call at and how long we stay where is decided – as in real sailing – by the wind, the weather and the crew together.
For everyone who wants to collect miles for their next sailing certificate: as we cross the open sea on this passage, plenty of nautical miles go into the logbook. Of course we will issue you an official mileage confirmation at the end of the trip.

Our beautiful GALINI is a very fast, large and comfortable yacht. She spent the winter in the Caribbean and will cross the Atlantic in April/May.
She is a modern Hanse 575 with 4 double cabins and a skipper's cabin. Each cabin has its own bathroom with electric toilet. Wi-Fi via Starlink (optional), multi-media, generator 220 V / 7 kW, (230 V in all cabins), washing machine, air fryer and coffee machine. She has large solar panels, radar, AIS, a watermaker, hydraulic bathing platform and a dinghy with outboard motor. An over-equipment of safety and navigation and much more, in short everything needed to be self-sufficient without having to call at a supply harbour. A yacht that meets the highest requirements for safety, design and comfort.
Her sailing characteristics are also outstanding! The Hanse was designed by Vovo Ocean Racers and is the fastest yacht in its class. Fun sailing is guaranteed!
In early October, the Balearics still offer wonderful sailing conditions: air temperatures are 20–25°C, the water is a pleasant 22–23°C – more than warm enough for swimming. The sun is lower and bathes the islands in a particularly warm, golden light. On the crossing from Sardinia to Menorca, variable winds are possible – from light calms to strong Tramontana from the north. That is exactly why we choose the departure time carefully. On Menorca, the Tramontana (north) dominates the north coast, while the south coast is usually sheltered and calm. Along Mallorca's north-west coast, the wind can be channelled by the high mountains of the Tramuntana – impressive sailing in front of a spectacular backdrop. In October you have to expect isolated bad weather phases – the two buffer days give us the necessary flexibility. But most of the time we can expect glorious autumn sunshine and good sailing wind.
Anyone can, if they wish, help with sailing, occasionally steer the ship or simply enjoy the beautiful nature and the day. In addition, everyone is jointly responsible for the crew's well-being. That means everyone takes turns preparing breakfast or looking after dinner. Usually the hobby cooks on board soon emerge and those who are not so into culinary arts simply hold back and wash up. When berthing and unberthing, everyone usually lends a hand according to their abilities and after briefing by the skipper. The boat is to be kept clean by the crew members during the voyage. However, the final cleaning is done by the marina staff.
All crew members (except the skipper) pay an agreed amount into the crew kitty. This kitty covers all common costs incurred during the voyage (e.g. diesel, harbour fees, deposit insurance, transit log, tourist tax, national and nature park fees, service pack for provided bed linen, final cleaning, gas, marina fee for the first and last night in harbour, etc.). According to old seafaring custom, the skipper is fed by the crew during the voyage.
Berth charter is the best opportunity for everyone who wants to get to know sailing life. Previous knowledge or own sailing experience is not necessary. But perhaps you have already gained sailing experience, completed a sailing course and want to deepen it? – Then the skipper will give you the opportunity to try yourself out and help you gain future confidence. The crew can help shape the course of the voyage and their wishes will be taken into account, subject to safety and weather. On such a voyage you meet like-minded people, can make new nice acquaintances and have an experienced skipper at your side who takes care of all nautical matters. The cabins on the yacht are usually equipped with different but very similar cabins. The berths are allocated by the skipper taking into account crew wishes. Whole cabins can be chartered by individuals, couples or families. Payment is per person and you don't have to worry about anything else.
We want to make sailing more sustainable and environmentally friendly. On GALINI we test various products that provide a great sailing experience while reducing the environmental impact. At the same time, she is on a journey to explore the world. Her base is Poros, Greece. But she is usually on a long voyage. Our small team of skippers looks forward to experiencing a real sailing adventure with you all!
