- Sailing Area
- Our voyage connects three of the most fascinating sailing areas in the Mediterranean. The start on the Amalfi Coast is only about 30 minutes from Naples Airportideal for a hassle-free journey. From there the route leads across the open Tyrrhenian Sea to the Aeolian Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site of seven volcanic islands north of Sicily. Active volcanoes, black lava beaches contrasting with turquoise water, steaming fumaroles and lush green slopes – the archipelago is shaped by volcanism and remains surprisingly unspoilt. The distances between the islands are short, with plenty of anchorages and mooring fields available. Through the legendary Strait of Messina with its well-known currents, the journey continues along Sicily’s east coast to Syracuse – the ancient world city with its baroque old town island of Ortigia. From the marina in Syracuse, Catania Airport can be reached in about an hour, making crew changes and departure easy.
Our adventure begins with crew change in the afternoon at Marina di Stabia at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. After boarding, getting to know each other and safety briefing, we first sail to Capri – the legendary island is practically on our doorstep. From there we go along the breathtaking Amalfi Coast with its pastel-coloured villages on dramatic cliffs. If wind and weather permit, we depart from the Amalfi Coast for the big overnight sail: around 120 nautical miles across the open Tyrrhenian Sea heading for Stromboli. Night watches, starry skies and the special feeling of expanse and freedom make this passage a highlight of the voyage – and with luck we reach Stromboli at nightfall, when the lava lights up the night sky. From there we continue through the Aeolian Islands – Panarea, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano – each island has its own character, from the exclusive elegance of Panarea to the steaming fumaroles of Vulcano. The distances between the islands are short, leaving plenty of time for swimming, exploring and enjoying. Through the legendary Strait of Messina with its strong currents we sail along Sicily’s east coast to Syracuse – the ancient world city with its baroque old town island of Ortigia, a worthy finale for this special voyage. Which harbours and bays we exactly call at and how long we stay where is decided – as in real sailing – by the wind, the weather and the crew together.
For anyone collecting miles for their next sailing certificate: since we cross the open sea on this voyage, a good number of nautical miles go into the logbook. Of course, we will issue you with an official miles confirmation at the end of the trip.

Our trip connects three of the most fascinating sailing areas in the Mediterranean. Starting on the Amalfi Coast, just around 30 minutes from Naples airport – ideal for easy travel. From there, the route leads across the open Tyrrhenian Sea to the Lipari Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of seven volcanic islands north of Sicily. Active volcanoes, black lava beaches contrasting with turquoise water, steaming fumaroles and lush green slopes – the archipelago is shaped by volcanism and remains surprisingly unspoiled. Distances between the islands are short, and anchorages and mooring fields are abundant. Through the legendary Strait of Messina with its well-known currents, we continue along Sicily’s east coast to Syracuse – the ancient metropolis with its baroque old town island of Ortigia. From the marina in Syracuse, Catania airport can be reached in about an hour, making crew changeovers and departure easy.
Late June / early July brings summer temperatures (air: Ø 27–32°C, water: Ø 23–25°C). The prevailing wind direction around the Lipari Islands is north to north-west (Tramontana/Maestrale), mostly moderate at 2–4 Bft. Near the coast and between the islands, thermal breezes often build up in the afternoon. In the Strait of Messina, strong currents and jet effects are expected, making sailing particularly exciting. Rain is very rare in late June – mostly brilliant sunshine and long, warm evenings await us.

What are the crew’s duties?
Everyone can, if they want, help with sailing, even steer the boat at times, or simply enjoy the beautiful nature and the day. In addition, everyone is jointly responsible for the crew’s wellbeing. This means that everyone takes turns preparing breakfast or cooking dinner. Usually the hobby chefs on board quickly emerge, and those who are not so into cooking simply step back and do the washing up. When mooring and unmooring, everyone generally helps according to their abilities and after instruction from the skipper. The boat must be kept clean by the crew members during the trip. However, the final cleaning is done by the marina staff.
What does the crew kitty mean?
All crew members (except the skipper) pay a jointly agreed amount into the crew kitty. This kitty covers all shared expenses incurred during the trip (e.g. diesel, harbour fees, deposit insurance, transit log, visitor’s tax, national and nature park fees, service pack for the provided bed linen, final cleaning, gas, marina fee for the first and last harbour night, etc.). The skipper is provided with meals by the crew during the trip according to old seafaring tradition.
What does cabin charter mean?
Cabin charter is the best way for anyone who wants to experience the sailing life. No prior knowledge or sailing experience is necessary. Perhaps you already have sailing experience, have completed sailing training and want to deepen it? – Then the skipper will give you the opportunity to try things out yourself and help you gain future confidence. The crew can help shape the course of the trip, and your wishes will be taken into account subject to safety and weather. On such a trip you meet like-minded people, can make new nice acquaintances, and have an experienced skipper at your side who takes care of all nautical matters. The cabins on the yacht are usually equipped with different but very similar cabins. The bunks are allocated by the skipper taking crew wishes into account. Entire cabins can be chartered by individuals, couples or families. Payment is per person and you don’t have to worry about anything else.
We want to make sailing more sustainable and environmentally friendly. On our GALINI we test innovative products to combine a great sailing experience with the smallest possible ecological footprint. Our base is on Poros, Greece – from there we explore the most beautiful cruising areas in the world.
